Plotting Instructions

Request a plot by filling in plot labels in the text boxes, and placing the numbers to be plotted in the large box below them. Enter both an x and then a y value on each line, separated by white space (blanks).

For example, for an x value of 5.85 and a y value of 0.425, type "5.85 0.425" onto a single line, and hit return. Do not add any quotation marks, commas, parentheses, or brackets — just type the individual numbers in turn.

A sine wave will be fit to your data, shifted to run from 0 to 1 in amplitude (in y), with a period of 29.5 days (the length of the lunar month). This is the pattern expected when plotting the fractional illumination of the Moon against the amount of time since the new moon phase.

Keep track of which variable you are plotting on the x-axis, and which variable you are plotting on the y-axis. Make sure to include proper units in your axis labels, to help with this.

Be careful when entering your data. Do not leave blank lines, or add extra entries to the lines that contain the numbers to be plotted.
