Course Grades
Assignments will be added to the table shown below, once they have been graded and entered into our records.
- Students are identified by a random four-digit code (not by Aggie ID). To be reminded of your grade code, click here.
- Please let us know if you think that there is a difference between a score shown here and the parallel one shown in the Canvas LMS. (If this happens, assume that the score shown here is correct and that the one shown in Canvas is problematic.)
- The mean (average) and maximum values for each assignment are listed at the bottom of the columns, so that you can compare your score with the average score.
-
The first two columns labeled Homework show the average score (%) for
review quizzes completed within the self-review library, and the total number
taken (#). Your homework score (Sc) is listed in the third column, and is
calculated two ways. By default, your homework score will be equal to your
average score on all review quizzes. However, we also want to reward those
who are unfamiliar with the material but study extensively.
We thus calculate a bonus homework score by checking the number of review quizzes completed by each student. If you take an average of 20 or more quizzes per week, your bonus homework score will be 100%. If you take an average of 18-19 quizzes per week, your bonus homework score will be 90%; for 16-17 quizzes it will be 80%; for 14-15 quizzes it will be 70%; for 12-13 quizzes it will be 60%. If your bonus homework score is higher than your average score on all review quizzes, this will become your homework score.
Everyone who takes at least 20 review quizzes per week (at least 320 in total), will receive a homework score of 100%. The point of this system is to reward both those do well on the review quizzes and those who work hard to study. - The column labeled EC is for extra credit work. Each point of extra credit is worth +0.6% towards your overall course grade. Most extra credit projects (watching a space-themed film, attending a public observing night, listening to a piece of astronomically-themed music) are worth up to one point; reading an approved science or science fiction book is worth up to two points (because of the amount of time involved).
- Total scores (labeled Sum) are based on homework and quiz scores (each valued at 17.5% of the total, or 35% together), laboratory exercises (25%), and the midterm (15%) and final (25%) exams. Final exam scores have been factored into the total scores.
