Your local horizon stretches out like a flat plane, dividing the sky into half above the horizon (seen) and half below the horizon (unseen).

Here is the daily pattern of the Sun, rising in the east and setting in the west. It rises at dawn and then transits, or reaches its maximum height in the sky, at local noon. Six hours later it sets at dusk.
