When driving back from Mauna Kea, on Saddle Road headed towards Hilo, there was a point where the local foliage abruptly stopped. This was the site of a past lava flow. Quite amazing how quickly the scenery changed.
We ended up seeing this expanse of lava rock out the window for a large part of the trip down.
