Linux machines in the department are set up to print via cups.

You are able to print from your laptops, but will need to add them using the below IPs -

Here are the IPs for the printers in the department:

10.33.5.25 (astro-hpm454dw) - Color printer in AY118 
10.33.5.4 (astro-canonira6555) - Copy Rm Copier (use LPD)
10.33.5.20 (astro-hp) - B&W upstairs printer (near Rene/Juie office) (use IPP)

For astro-canonira6555 (copier in the copy rm) you will need to use the Line Printer Daemon (LPD) rather than Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) in order to add this one on Mac computers.

The above three printers should cover most needs of the normal users in the department.

In order to ensure this new fancy color printer lasts as long as possible:

1) Please do not take error codes into your own hands (unless its a guided 'remove paper jam' error message and you are comfortable following those instructions). 2) Please report any and all issues and error codes to Zach and Jon via the issues at astronomy.nmsu.edu email alias. 3) If you notice the ink levels are getting low, please notify Zach and Jon via the issues at astronomy.nmsu.edu email alias. 4) This printer is not the copier room printer! It is not meant for extraordinarily large jobs. It can handle a manuscript being printed in full color, but cannot handle 30 lab manuals being printed in full color.

Making posters is relatively straightforward. There is a non-negligible cost to make these, so it is best to get it right the first time and not to have to make too many attempts.

We have three kinds of paper available; in order of expense, these are: lightweight paper, heavyweight paper, and glossy paper. It is very easy to switch between different rolls (you use the menu items on the printer itself to load and unload rolls). The poster printer has 42 inch wide paper; hence you want one of the two dimensions of your poster to be smaller than this size. To avoid needing to make long cuts, you might want to choose to have either the vertical or horizontal dimension be exactly 42 inches.

The easiest method to print from the poster printer is to load a PDF version of your poster onto a thumb drive (there are pink thumb-drives hanging on the board with other keys inside Rm 116 that you can use).

Once you insert the thumb-drive into the printer (above the touch screen display), you can then navigate to the 'print' option on the display - and then configure the print settings as needed and follow the on-screen instructions.

PLEASE NOTE - Even though the printer poster is working, and we have been able to successfully do several prints, please do not wait till the last minute to print your poster! The poster printer usually only gets used in bursts (near end of the semester and right before AAS!), as such its always possible that a problem has manifested over this time without us knowing. Additionally, replacement ink and printheads are not sold in local stores and can only be purchased online. While I have some backup ink, there is always the possibility of requiring an order which would take 2-3+ days.
