IDL on Astronomy

Currently we have both IDL 8.5 and IDL 8.8 on astronomy. if you simply type the command:

idl

You will have access to IDL 8.5. We currently have IDL 8.5 set as the default. If you wish to use the nwer IDL 8. version while on astronomy, you will first have to run the following command, followed by 'idl' -

source /home/local/harris/idl88/bin/idl_setup
idl

Remote Access to IDL 8.8 on Personal Machines

We have 25 licenses that can be check out from the astronomy server in order for you to be able to run IDL on your personal laptop / computer.

To Do So:

1) Download IDL88 on your computer (please contact Zach E. / issues@… for the required download file). We'll stick it in your home dir on astronomy for you to download it.

2) Create a plain text file on the client (your) computer to reference the license server. To do this, you need to create a file called 'o_licenseserverurl.txt' with the contents 'http://astronomy.nmsu.edu:7070/fne/bin/capability' (of course, without the quotation marks!)

3) Place that file ('o_licenseserverurl.txt') in your /home/local/harris/license directory on your personal computer. This will vary depending on your environment - for example, Zach needed to placce this file on their Mac at /Applications/harris/license - if you need help figuring out where to place it, contact Zach!

4) Open up the Harris Licence Tool - and you'll have to point to our server - astronomy.nmsu.edu (port 7070).

MATLab

We currently have R2020a MatLab on astronomy. In order to start this, type the command:

matlab

If this command is evoked from a desktop, it will open the GUI - if not, you'll be taken to the CLI (Command Line Interface) for matlab. (For example - if you SSH into astronomy and type 'matlab' you'll be taken to the CLI version. However, if you use x2go, it should bring up the GUI).
