ASTRONOMY 535 - PROBLEM SET #3b - DUE 04/02/03

1. As part of the discussion on optics and adaptive optics, you are asked to find a scientific refereed paper that is based on adaptive optics observations of a particular source or set of sources. Summarize this paper in a brief document (preferably typed) that includes:

   - The telescope and AP system used, including e.g. number of actuators, how close the system could theoretically get to diffraction limited imaging, etc.

   - How was the wavefront monitored and corrected for in real time?

   - The application the system was being used for in this paper, and how well it worked. What was the best image quality they obtained, how close did it get to ideal expectations, what might have been some of the limiting circumstances.

   You should be prepared to present a brief discussion of this particular application in class (5 to 10 minutes).
