Pluto's Atmosphere

  • Pluto's does have a very tenuous and extended atmosphere, about 1/200,000 the surface pressure of Earth's.

  • All atmospheric data comes from 4 stellar occultations: 1985, 1988, 2002, 2006, and 2007 (seen from New Mexico!)

  • Atmosphere theorized to disappear as Pluto gets further from Sun after its 1989 perihelion...no evidence yet.

  • Atmosphere consists of mostly nitrogen and some methane. Small amount of carbon monoxide also theorized for surface temperature to fit observations.

  • Upper atmosphere appears to be warmer than surface, about 100K. This is possibly due to sublimation of nitrogen ice.
