Tombaugh's Relentless Search

  • Tombaugh uses the "blink comparator" to blink quickly between two images.

     

  • Two images of the same part of the sky taken several days apart are used.

     

  • A distant planet should appear as a star which "moves" between the images.

     

  • Tombaugh exhaustively searchs thousands of images over large areas of the ecliptic.
