Low Surface Brightness Galaxies


Malin 1.

  • Central Surface Brightness > 23 mag/arcsec2

(CSB of Milky Way assumed to be 21 mag/arcsec2)

  • Generally lower metallicity and bluer than HSBs (though there are many exceptions)

  • Massive LSBs have MHI > 1010Msolar

    (They may also be quite large - Malin 1 has a scale length of 55kpc.)
