- 1989: The first L dwarf, GD 165B was discovered by Becklin and Zuckerman through the excess of infrared surrounding its white dwarf companion, GD 165.
- 1995: Gliese 229B, the first T dwarf, was discovered after Nakajima discovered it in images of a red dwarf, Gliese 229, taken with use of an adaptive optics system.
