The Doppler Shift in Stellar Spectra

- The spectra of stars have certain absorption features due to elements in their atmospheres.

- If a star is moving away from us, they appear to shift to the red.

- If a star is moving towards us, they appear to shift to the blue.

- We can use this to tell us if a star is moving towards or away from us, but not sideways.
