This crater used to be a site where the ancient people found stone that was particularly good for making adzes. Until an eruption flooded the area with fresh lava rock in 1877. And just in case they considered excavation, another eruption in 1974 added another layer of rock, 20 feet thick.
(An adz is like a hatchet, but the blade is perpendicular to the handle. It kinda looks like a cross between a hatchet and a hoe.)
