Astronomers using the telescopes on Mauna Kea typically stay at dorms in a little "base camp" called Hale Pohaku. Because of the thin air on Mauna Kea, and because most of the clouds are below the current elevation, vegetation has a harder time up here. It looks a lot more like the Southwest than the Hilo area.
