At this point in the hike down, I had a change of heart. I realized that I had only had a light breakfast that morning, and I wasn't taking any more sustenance down with me. I was also lugging around a backpack. I decided to turn back. I figure that I made it a quarter of the way down, but that's probably a generous estimate.

Every step of the climb back up, I was glad I turned around when I did.

I don't feel too bad about it, though. I did get to see the bottom back in my previous Hawaii trip, in 1997.
