The last of the starry sky photos. Here we have Canis Major (the Big Dog) near the dome of IRTF. I was hoping to get Canis Major near one of the observatories behind IRTF, but the aiming didn't work out.
In this image, we also have Saiph, Orion's dimmer foot; Lepus (the Hare), just underneath Orion; Canis Minor (the Little Dog), which is little more than just two stars (a tail without a dog!); and the incredibly dim constellation Monoceros (the Unicorn). The bright star in the upper left belongs to the feet of Gemini.
It is also worth noting that the second brightest star in the night sky, Canopus, also comes substantially above the horizon at Mauna Kea. I saw it in its full glory. The only other location where I've seen Canopus has been in Las Cruces, but there it doesn't get very high above the horizon, and through all that air it ends up looking like just another moderately bright star.
