IMPORTANT: KEEP GOOD LOGS
PROJECTS:
SPICAM: Some test imaging of some candidate "orphan afterglows", transient
objects that could be optical counterparts of gamma-ray bursts. However, we need
deep imaging to confirm that they are not just variable stars that were fainter
than the detection limit in the search images. A list of objects can be found
orphan.txt ; note that the right ascension here
is given in degrees, not hours (see and ask about using
a.awk). Assume that 20 minutes of exposure per target is reasonable.
Objects listed in priority order.
ARCES: Some optical echelle spectroscopy of calibration stars that have been
observed in high resolution in the near-IR, to calibrate the IR-derived abundances
with optical-derived abundances. A list of objects can be found
here. The second to last column
gives the V magnitude. Assume that a 45 minute exposure is required for a
star with V=11; exposure times for other objects should be scaled according
to their magnitudes. Also, tests for velocity stability. Calibration: bias
frames, flat fields, wavelength calibration, (dark frames)
DIS: Some spectroscopy of stars covering a range of spectral types.
TRIPLESPEC: spectral standards , Tom's WUMa, and associated telluric stars (see link in Tom file).sky monitoring. Questions: length of slit,
where to start nod from. Need exposure times.
Calibration: darks, flats, (wavelength cals),
(linearity). Telluric absorption correction (A0V stars).
NICFPS: JHK imaging of NGC 595 and IC133 in M33. See m33.txt .
Need to figure out size for sky offset. Need to figure out exposure times
in JHK: length of a single exposure set by sky brightness, total number of
exposures by science. Calibration needs: dark frames at the exptimes of the
science exposures, flat fields (lights on + lights off), linearity frames.
CONSTRAINTS:
Friday 1st half TRIPLESPEC will be on, TRIPLESPEC/ARCES are preferred
Sat 2nd half NICFPS will be on, NICFPS/ARCES are preferred
Sun 2nd half will be Apollo+Echelle, so are open for NA2 1st half
Friday 10/30 B half
TRIPLESPEC observations of a bunch of stars of spectral types A-M, with
associated nearby A stars for telluric absorption. Finished with long
sequence on an A star for monitoring variations in sky and telluric
absorption. Flats taken at end of night, but only with lights on. Flats
with and without lights were grabbed from first half observing.
Saturday 10/31 A half
ARCES observations of a few stars for metallicities (stars that were also
observed with IR PHOENIX in 2008). Cals taken late afternoon.
NICFPS observations of OB association in M33 (IC133). Used extended source
dither script to chop far off to sky. Had to stop because object
was going to high altitude. One ARCES exposure taken during this
time, then returned to NICFPS/IC133. Darks taken in afternoon, but
flats failed due to saturation. More darks taken during ARCES observations,
and full set of darks+flats taken at end of night.
Sunday 11/01 A half
DIS setup B1200/R1200 centered at 4500/8500.
DIS cals taken in afternoon, but flawed because eyelid wasn't open
and flat exptimes were for low res, not high res.
SPICAM put on for twilight flats and subsequent imaging of SN13279
orphan afterglow candidate. First exposure saturated in sky because
taken pre-astronomical twilight.
Eyepiece put on for some visual imaging.
DIS put on for observations of stars of a range of spectral type,
concentrating on A stars for Tom. 300s flats taken after stars.
