Biographical Info


I grew up in Fort Worth, TX, where I attended R.L. Paschal High School. After briefs stints at Louisiana State University (LSU) and Tarrant County College (TCC), I graduated from Texas Christian University (TCU) in 2011 with B.S. in physics & astronomy. From 2011-present, I have worked as plate design coordinator for the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), one of four sub-surveys of the third installment of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). My job is to run and maintain target selection codes for selecting red giant star targets for APOGEE. I provide target lists for each plate, which then get translated into physical fiber holes drilled into the aluminum plates that are plugged with fibers and loaded into the focal plane of the SDSS 2.5m telescope for APOGEE observations. I was stationed at the University of Virginia (UVA) in Charlottesville, VA for the first three years of my APOGEE work, but in June 2014 I relocated to New Mexico State University (NMSU) in Las Cruces, NM. Finally, I started astronomy graduate school at NMSU in August 2015.

I’m interested in a wide range of research, from the supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxies to individual weird stars in our own Milky Way Galaxy. Simply put, I use spectroscopy to study emission line objects. Chances are good that I’m working on an SDSS-related project at any given point in time.

My first research project dealt a large sample of blue, star-forming galaxies culled from the SDSS DR1-7. Despite having very blue optical colors, more typical of blue dwarf galaxies, the galaxies in our sample had absolute magnitudes clearly in the non-dwarf regime. I worked on this project with Dr. Michael P. Fanelli and Dr. Pamela Marcum.

My second research project started with an REU internship under Dr. Bill Keel at the University of Alabama. Hanny’s Voorwerp had recently been discovered in SDSS images, and my project for the summer was basically to try and find other Voorwerp-like objects in SDSS data. This is an ongoing project with several papers already published.

My third research project focused on deriving bulk radial velocities (RVs) of Galactic open clusters via multi-fiber spectroscopy. This was a continuation of thesis work by Dr. Peter Frinchaboy of TCU, and my task was reduction and RV extraction of similar data taken after his PhD work. The results will likely be used in a future paper combining RVs from my work and from the APOGEE survey.

My fourth research project deals with APOGEE spectroscopy of B-type emission line stars. I’ve authored two papers on this topic, and have a few more related paper drafts in progress.
