Research
I began my graduate studies in
August 2008. Since then I have done a large shift in research focus
from my undergraduate days. In the past, most of my research was in the
field of radio astronomy. My interests however have now led me to
atmospheric modeling. I am now working with Jim Murphy examining the
atmosphere of Mars, usually via modeling. I am presently involved in
several projects modeling gravity waves, non-LTE, and Mars Pathfinder
data. On the side though, I also play with some terrestrial “mesoscale”
models that I have been developing.
As an undergraduate I worked with Dr. Ylva Philstrom on studying the far infrared-radio correlation for active galactic nuclei (AGN), utilizing both radio and Spitzer data sets, and on using the Very Large Array (VLA) to observe OH masers near to the Galactic Center.
I spent two summers working as a research assistant at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), and also at the Netherlands Foundation for Research in Astronomy (ASTRON). I worked with Dr. Lorant Sjouwerman to evaluate 43 GHz SiO masers as potential calibrators for the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astronomy (VERA) project to study the Galactic Center. We analyzed thousands (it seemed like millions!) of image planes, and identified two viable candidates for follow-up observations. I also assisted with a search for exoplanets around white dwarfs, and in Dwingaloo analyzed images of the Whirlpool Galaxy via Faraday rotation measure synthesis. I spent Summer 2008 at NRAO in Socorro again, working with Dr. Jeff Wagg and Dr. Chris Carilli on the nature of the high-redshift tail of the submillimeter galaxy population.
One of my hobbies is
meteorology, particularly storm chasing.
