Research
I am searching for globular clusters in the Andromeda Galaxy, M31, the
nearest, large spiral galaxy to the Milky Way (located at a distance of 750
kiloparsecs). I am working with my advisor, Dr. Jon Holtzman, using Sloan
Digital Sky Survey images for this project.
The above photo is an HST image of the globular cluster M15, located 40,000
light-years from Earth in the halo of the Milky Way galaxy. The hundreds of
thousands of stars which make up the cluster are thought to be roughly 12
billion years old.
Meetings
I have presented posters on this work at the January 2004 American
Astronomical Society meeting in Atlanta and at the March 2004 SDSS
Collaboration Meeting, and will also present at the January 2005
American Astronomical Society meeting in San Diego.
Future Work
I defended my M.S. thesis on New M31 Globular Clusters derived from the SDSS,
on July 19, 2005. I am considering future work in scientific journalism, and have
been accepted into the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.
