STS 497I Space Colonization Links

Compiled by GROUP 2: Bob Mangold, and Josh Brosius
Catgories are "Public", "Government", "Industry", and "University". Ratings are on scale of 1-5, with 5 being most useful/interesting/informative.

Space Colonization Co. Catagory: Public; Rating: 5
The main focus of this site, as mentioned by the webmaster, is to increase the awareness of the general public about space colonization. There is a proposed plan for colonization on the webpage. Overall this page is rather thorough and provides a lot of good information that would be considered useful by novice space colonization enthusiasts.

Curtis' Site Catagory: Public; Rating: 4.5
This site has quite a few good sections to it. It has a timeline, a section on the rationale behind space colonization and sections on how we could colonize certain different things in space such as Mars and the moon. This site is kind of basic, yet done well graphically.

Black Horse Catagory: University/Industry; Rating 4
Talks about the Black Horse, a space shuttle that can be aerial refueled. Although this is not a space page, it relates because this directly effects the economics of space colonization. Quality Idea.

Geowood's Site Catagory: Public/Industry; Rating: 3.5
This site is not very colorful but it has a great deal of information about some of the more technical and scientific aspects of space colonization. It also has some good artists representations of what space habitats might look like. This is a good site, it does a good job of addressing some problems and solutions to those problems. It lacks any creativity in design though.

Big Bear Catagory:Public; Rating: 3
An open forum with the aforementioned O'Neill about space colonization. Basic Q and A session. Could be quite useful for our discussions.

Life Science 3 Catagory: Government/Public; Rating: 3
This site takes a pretty direct approach and tries to answer some of the basic Who, What, Where, When and Whys of space colonization. There are some decent images and some good links also. Not a bad sight, not too in depth.

Biosphere 2 Catagory: University; Rating: 3
This is another site about a biosphere. Specifically the Biosphere 2 which is being headed by Plant Biologist Charles Barry Osmond. A good biosphere sight, gets very technical but worth looking at.

Mining Co. Catagory: Public; Rating: 3
The author talks about the possibility of space colonies on the moon and Mars and even Oceans in space. Each section is short, but provides factual information, instead of opinions. This link could provide a small amount of background info to our project, but nothing substantial.

Settle Catagory: Public; Rating: 2
This site has some good pictures of some of the proposed settlements for space. It focuses on creating our own habitats in space rather than inhabiting other planets. This site is decent just because of the pictures, other than that there are not too many resources.

Biosphere Project Catagory: Public/University; Rating: 2
This site is not that related to space colonization but it has an interesting section on a project that was done involving a self-contained biosphere. Not real great.

Think Quest Catagory: Public; Rating: 2
This site talks about what current spacestations and satellites we have currently. Also, space settlement is mentioned, however, it doesn't really mention current solutions, only "that the Earth is going to have a problem" in the future. Points out all the obvious.
