/begin/ STS 497 I SPACE COLONIZATION; SPRING 2001 ANNOUNCEMENTS How class will be run onFeb 16: We will begin with the movie on the Challenger Accident, watching the 1st half. We will then do the Pat Dasch interview, following the Drake interview format with Group 2 moderating. We will then watch the 2nd half of the Chalenger Accident and end with a 30 minute in-class discussion with Mark Schlaefer. GROUP 2... Email questions to Pat Dasch by Noon on Monday February 12! ASSIGNMENTS: given on February 9, 2001 1. Write up a semi-detailed outline of the Paine article. Use standard outline format (a good dictionary usually has such a format explained). In your outline due not go more detailed than sub-sub sections (i.e. I.A.i.). Follow the organization of Paine's article. Dates are critical. Write a very short paragraph at the end of each "section" contrasting today's Space program with that outlined in the section (i.e. completed / didn't complete objectives, etc.). DUE: Feb 16 in class. Hand in type-written version on 8.5 x 11 in paper and also email text only version to cwc prior to class on Feb 16. 2. Type in your answers to the "Moon Shot" questions and tie together in the form of a "report" of the events. That is, add some transitional sentences and some commentary as you wish to tell the story in your own words. No page limit- but, make it as brief as possible. DUE: Feb 23 in class. Hand in type-written version on 8.5 x 11 in paper and also email text-only version to cwc prior to class on Feb 23. 3. In preparation for class on Feb 23 (Sid Goldstein) a. Read Part II of "The High Frontier". b. Read the Jan/Feb issue of Ad Astra, "The Road Map for Space" essays c. Watch "The Vision" on the CD accompanying "The High Frontier" d. Write down (type written with your name on it on an 8.5 x 11 in paper) four questions from "The High Frontier" and two questions from the Ad Astra articles. Focus on microeconomics and the technological steps necessary for the colonization of space. Bring 2 copies to class with you, one to be handed in at the beginning of class and one for you to keep for the discussion period.
