/begin/ February 16, 2001 STS 497 I SPACE COLONIZATION; SPRING 2001 ANNOUNCEMENTS Sid Goldstein will lecture on February 23. Dr. Robert Zubrin will give a video-con interview on March 2nd. ASSIGNMENTS 0. This is the same assignment (a reminder) as #3 given on Feb 9. In preparation for class on Feb 23 (Sid Goldstein) a. Read Part II of "The High Frontier". b. Read the Jan/Feb issue of Ad Astra, "The Road Map for Space" essays c. Watch "The Vision" on the CD accompanying "The High Frontier" d. Write down (type written with your name on it on an 8.5 x 11 in paper) four questions from "The High Frontier" and two questions from the Ad Astra articles. Focus on microeconomics and the technological steps necessary for the colonization of space. Bring 2 copies to class with you, one to be handed in at the beginning of class and one for you to keep for the discussion period. DUE: Feb 23; have reading completed, questions ready to hand in, and have watched the CD assignment prior to class. 1. Writing assignment. Describe the most efficient technological methods for developing space resources in the least time. The paper will be emailed to sidgoldstein@adelphia.net in MS Word format and be no longer than one page, double spaced. The paper will only deal with microeconomics and technology, not macroeconomics or politics (these will be covered on Apr 6). This exercise will help you to articulate this issue to the general (uninformed) public. DUE: Mar 2; the paper is due prior to class on March 2, 2001. 2. Purchase Robert Zubrin's book "The Case for Mars". There is an amazon.com link on the schedule page under March 2nd entries. It usually ships within 24 hours. Group 1: read and write 1-page synopsis of Chapters 1 & 6 Group 2: read and write 1-page synopsis of Chapters 2 & 7 Group 3: read and write 1-page synopsis of Chapters 3 & 8 Group 4: read and write 1-page synopsis of Chapters 4 & 9 Group 5: read and write 1-page synopsis of Chapters 5 & 10 Make 17 copies of each chapter report to be handed out. Each group will give a 6-minute (yes, 6-minute sharp) presentation (with audio/visual aids) on each Chapter, in chapter order. This will take an 1 hour if everyone sticks to their time allotment. DUE: Mar 2, presentation will begin at 11:15 sharp and go to 12:15. (Robert Zubrin video-cons at 12:30) 3. Each group formulate 4 questions for the video-con interview with Dr. Robert Zubrin (Mar 2). Email the questions to CWC and Group 3 by Sunday night (Feb 25). Group 3 will edit the questions and have them available for CWC review by Monday night (Feb 26).
