MARS SOCIETY STUDENTS Open to the Public April 28, 2003 Wartik 108 7:30 pm MODERATORS Dr. Lisa Brown, Director, The Pennsylvania Space Grant Consortium Dr. Chris Churchill Research Associate, Dept. of Astronomy co-instructor STS497I Mr. Brock Pronko Journalist co-instructor STS497I PARTICULARS - Duration will be 1:20 minutes - There will be 12 students: 6 Moon First Proponents & 6 Mars First Proponents - The students on each team will be divided into three groups of two - There will be eight (8) questions in total - Each group will prepare answers to 3 questions - There will be an opening statement by each team, 3 min 30 sec max - There will be 1 "answer", 1 "rebuttal", and 1 "response" for each question - The "answer" to each question, 3 min max - The "rebuttal" to each "answer", 4 min max - The "response" to each "rebuttal", 1 min max - There will be a "closing statement" by each team, 3 min 30 sec max NOTE TO PARTICIPANTS Each team will identify a team leader to represent them. There will be a brief introduction to the debate by Chris Churchill. A coin toss will decide which team gets the first opening statement or rights to answer the first of the eight questions. After the last question, the team who made the second opening statement will make the first closing statement. Visual aids are encouraged (optional). The answers for each question can be outlined on a brief Power Point (PPT) presentations that supports and outlines the verbal articulation of the answer within the 3-4 min time allocation. Format of the PPT is strictly as follows: 3 slides max, white background, minimum 24 point black Times-Roman font. One (1) visual aid (graph, image, table) per PPT is allowed. All PPT presentations will be loaded on the computer prior to the debate and the computer will be operated by a designated assistant to facilitate the execution of the PPT. Thus, each PPT presentation should have the name of the format "Moon-Q1.ppt" or "Mars-Q1.ppt". In addition to the PPT, only hand held written notes for additional assistance are allowed. The eight questions will be available for the participants no later than Monday April 21st. Based upon the questions, the team members should pick their groups and each group should pick three questions and prepare their PPT answers. The debate format is as follows: 7:30 1.
