You do NOT need to know all of the details of nuclear fusion in the sun's core. You DO need to know the net reaction (4 hydrogens -> 1 helium + energy) and that the energy comes from E=mc². Be able to explain the application of E=mc². You also need to know the four fundamental forces (gravity, electromagentism, strong nculer, and weak nuclear), and the basic of how each act.
