LECTURES/MATERIAL COVERED
1. Scale of the Universe
[Reading 10e] [Reading 9e] [PPT Lecture Slides] [Lecture Outline]
For this segment, there a lot of extra PPT Lecture Slides from the that we did not cover; they are just there for discussion if we actually talk about some of those things the first day or two. You should focus on the scale of the universe, the material presented in the Lecture Outline, and the Reading material.2. The Sky and Seasons [Reading 10e] [Reading 9e] [PPT Lecture Slides] [Lecture Outline]
3. Light: What it is
[Reading 10e] [Reading 9e] [PPT Lecture Slides] [Lecture Outline]4. Bohr Atom and Kirchoff's Laws
[Reading 10e] [Reading 9e] [PPT Lecture Slides] [Lecture Outline]
NOTE: These PPT Lecture Slides are the same as for segment 3, "Light: What it is")5. Gravity: Kepler and Newton's Laws
[Reading 10e] [Reading 9e] [PPT Lecture Slides] [Lecture Outline]6. Atoms and Starlight
[Reading 10e] [Reading 9e] [PPT Lecture Slides] [Lecture Outline]
You are NOT RESPONSIBLE for any new material from these PPT Lecture Slides. However, I include this segment on this review because some many of the slides and concepts are REVIEW of the Bohr Atom and Kirchoff's Laws. You are welcome and encouraged to use the overlapping material from these lectures to help study for the material in segement 4 above.
EXAM FORMAT
There are four sections
1. True/False
2. Multiple Choice
3. Matching/Identification/Recognition
4. Short Answer
You do NOT need a Scantron. You will write directly on the exam. Please review exam day policy on the syllabus.
RECOMMENDED STUDY PHILOSOPHY
If you are struggling with the amount and content of the lecture material, I suggest a minimum of 4-6 hours of review. If you have been staying up to speed, and if you have been staying up with the daily Reading assignments, PPT Lecture Slides, and Lecture Outlines, you can probably get by with about 2 hours for a thorough review. Either Way, here are my recommendations:
TO START: (ahead of time) Gather your book, the lecture Outlines, and the PPT Lecture Notes together and order the reviews and PPT notes in order of the lectures. Find a quiet, peaceful place, to study and plan out three 2 hour blocks of time during hours when you are intellectually sharp (not 2am!). When you study, get your self very comfortable and isolated.
PLAN: You should review the material in two stages. Stage 1 should be a overview of ALL lecture material. In this stage, do not concentrate on details of the information. This stage is a single overview, to be sure you are simply familiar with all of the material. Do not go over it in detail, but do not skip any of it either. This stage should take about 1-2 hours. As you got though Stage 1, jot down which material you feel insecure about so that you can revisit it for focused study during Stage 2. You might highlight the section on the Reading assignment, so that you know what pages to review, and highlight the Lecture Outlines where you feel you need to go back and study it in some detail. Before advancing to Stage 2, take a break, or wait until your second planned study period.
STAGE 1: In lecture order, one lecture at a time, (1) read the Lecture Outline while simultaneously thumbing through the relevant part of the PPT Lecture Slides (2) Skim (don't read) through the relevant part of the text book for this same lecture, using the Reading schedule to guide you. Be sure to spend a little additional time examining the Figures and/or Tables given on the Reading assignment. (3) Read (yes, read) the Chapter Summary - carefully and slowly read the bulleted summaries that are given on the Reading Assignment. As you go through this Lecture, identify material you feel insecure about so that you can revisit it for focused study during Stage 2. (4) Step to the next Lecture and repeat until you have reviewed all six lectures. This method insures that you have re-familiarized yourself with all the class material.
STAGE 2: Topic by topic, go back and really study the material that you identified for detailed study from Stage 1. I suggest spending more time reading the book on these individual topics, while keeping an eye on the PPT Lecture Slides and your notes from lecture. During this stage, you may find it useful to make flashcards of key bits of information for later quick review to keep the material fresh. I suggest that you break this stage in two two parts at a minimum so as to not become intellectually saturated. It is better to study in multiple 1 hour blocks, for example, than in one long 4 hour block. Success is 90% time management. Treat you mind in an organized fashion, and it will pull through for you. Good luck.
