The department owns a scanner for authorized use by faculty and graduate students. It is currently attached to the Linux machine, martian, in the APO observing room. The scanner is a Microtek ScanMaker III, which is a high quality scanner.

To use the scanner, follow these steps:

  1. Power on the scanner (switch at back right) if it is not on.

  2. Log onto martian

  3. Start the scanner software: xsane. If it says it can't find a scanner, just wait a minute or two and try again.

  4. Place your document face down on the scanner (you can also scan transparencies using a special setup).

  5. Use the preview window to do an initial scan. From the preview image, select the desired region to scan by pulling the edges of the dotted box to encompass what you want.

  6. Before hitting the scan button, you can play around with the scanning configuration using the separate scanner setup window. In this window, you can set the desired color and spatial resolution (the higher the resolution in color and/or spatially, the better the quality, but the larger the resulting file), output file type, etc.

  7. When configured as you like, hit the scan button to do the scan.

  8. After scanning your images, quit the scanner window.

  9. do whatever you want with the files...

  10. Turn off the scanner if you will not be using it again soon.
