Observing at APO 3.5m

General observing plan. If target up at beginning, do target, then sky. If A half, do quartzmask at beginning of night, time permitting.

Things to note or remember:
- Official start time; Twilight; End time
- H lamp should be mounted on truss and coupled with He lamp
- TUI - Preferences - Exposure. Auto get; save to can.../401/observe/tonight
- observing.cl to display and implot each image
- Guider: NA2, mode = field star // NA2 needs to be focused // red lamp // object XY; relative offset
- On-chip binning: 1x3, so it's binned in y (spatial direction)

In slit viewer window:
target goes right for positive x
target goes down for positive y

Raw data with DIS - wavelength increases to the left; pix increase to the right
DIS slitviewer - 0.298”/pix; FOV 159”x159”
DCAM - bottom of image → right side of spectrum

Before starting an exposure:
- SLEW: name, RA, dec, rot
- TRUSS: check lamps
- DIS: single/mask, grating/mirror
- DIS EXPOSE: auto get; type, number, red/blue, name
- NA2 GUIDER: mode = field star; "Expose," start image, "guide"

Before quitting TUI:
- copy over all images (including dcam and gcam - they will be erased when you quit out of TUI)
- delete images from observe/tonight directory

Starting the show:

- bias- make sure everything downloads properly

- quartzmaskHe- covers closed, g/mask, Br quartz and He lamps, 60s
if H line falls to the right of the passband in qmask, it's 6570 filter
if H line falls to the left of the passband, it's 6560 filter (see UT2008-0211 printout)

- arcmask- covers closed, g/mask, He lamp, 120s
want between 10K and 40K counts. saturation is around 60K
check spectrograph focus w/ implot - line widths should be ~2.5 pixels
enter target coords, target name, rot angle

- slitimage- covers closed, single, mirrors (no grating), He lamp, 15s
maskimage- covers closed, mask, mirrors (no grating), He lamp, 30s
continue with observing - calculate offsets while doing focus check

- slew to target and check focus with nearby star
RA???, dec???, Rot??? (rot = 90-PA, so to be perpendicular to major axis, rot = PA of major axis)

- while focusing- measure spatial offset from single slit to slit 6 in mask (slitimage and maskimage)
use implot to get center (centroid) of slit 6 and compare to center of single slit
    y-offset in slitviewer = 0.4 arcsec/pix * pix difference b/t slit 6 and single slit
if slit 6 is to the RIGHT of single slit, change in yw ill be POSITIVE for slitviewer
    change should be y ~ 3-5 arcsec
see UT2008-0411 notes in observing log or page R19 if any questions

- starmask - after focusing - g/mask, 40s
center with slitviewer (ctrl-click), apply y-offset so it's centered in slit 6
star should be in slit 6
look at location of star along slit; measure no. of pix from center of slit in quartzmask
    x-offset in slitviewer = 1.2 arcsec/pix * pix (3 x 0.4 arcsec b/c of binning)
if need to move target DOWN to be centered, change in x is POSITIVE in slitviewer
    change should be x ~ 23.49 arcsec
  starmask- re-center with slitviewer; apply x and y offsets; g/mask, 40s
double check that star is centered in slit in both directions
check star's focus on starmask spectrum (~1.8pix, 1.2arcsec/pix)

- arcmask- covers closed, g/mask, He lamp, 120s. LAMP OFF

- target- g/mask, 3600s ideally, expose in sets of 2 or 3 (w/ arc b/t sets)
center on star, if that's part of the plan
apply regular offsets and add'l offsets (if necessary to get desired field)
target moves RIGHT for POSITIVE X offset (in DIS slitviewer)
target moves DOWN for POSITIVE Y Offset (in DIS slitviewer)

- arcmask- covers closed, g/mask, He lamp, 120s. LAMP OFF

- sky- if after target, slew a couple hours east of target (increase RA)
(so telescope is at roughly same angle as when it observed target)
g/mask, 2x1800s or 2x2100s, depending on time (want to be done before twilight)
  relative offset y = 10 arcsec b/t frames

- quartzmask- covers closed, lamps off, 10 frames

- bias- covers closed, lamps off, 10 frames

If we used single slit:
- quartzslit- covers closed, grating, single slit, Br quartz, 3x240s. LAMP OFF
- arcslit- covers closed, grating, single slit, HeNeAr lamps, 60s. LAMPS OFF
