Jet laggers hike ($3 per car at ranger house)Enjoy a nice, easy, early morning hike to the beautiful Dripping Springs Area in the Organ Mountains. A local guide (i.e., NMSU graduate student) will meet everyone at the ranger station at 8am and hike with you. It is extremely easy to arrive there from Las Cruces; see this map (20km) from Hotel Encanto. Don't miss this place, and bring a camera and water! For those interested in this hike, please use this online signup sheet. If you will have a car, make a note of it, and those without cars will contact you, or vice versa. Teacher and student outreach reception (free)Students of the SPD and K-12 teachers from the Las Cruces area are invited to share some time and chat with solar scientists. Learn about some new solar missions and projects being done by scientists in industry, government, and academia. This is a good opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students with an interest in solar physics to network with each other and with prospective employers in an informal atmosphere. Also, local teachers can gather information related to science education and solar physics, in particular, to bring back to their classrooms.The location will be the banquet room at the NMSU golf course (directions from Hotel Encanto). Public lecture (free)Come see Dr. Dean Pesnell, SDO Project Scientist, talk about our Sun. To be held at NMSU Atkinson Recital Hall.From 17:00 there will be hands-on activities in the Atkinson Hall lobby, as well as solar viewing opportunities on the campus field outside of the hall. Sun & Fun! Come join the fun and learn some cool science about the Sun and stars! Teachers, students, scientists, and families are invited to participate in a hands-on science event to learn about things such as the electromagnetic spectrum (how do we learn about stars?); the scale of our solar system (how big is the Sun?); and ways the Sun affects our home planet (... and can we roast marshmallows in sunlight?). Tuesday, June 14, 12:30 -- 22:00. Afternoon excursions ($55 each)Two excursion options are available and you can choose your preference. Both groups will converge in the evening at White Sands National Monument for a twilight picnic dinner together. Excursion 1: Science and mountain trip!
Wednesday, June 15, 17:30 - 22:30. Conference banquet ($55)Learn about the local history of agriculture and cowboys in the Wild West! This year's banquet will be held at the lovely New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum. With an array of interesting exhibitions (including longhorn cattle) and a breathtaking view of the Organ Mountains during dinner, be sure not to miss this exciting event. Note that there is scheduled to be a total lunar eclipse (sorry, not solar) that evening which will occur right in our view above the mountains!! (CORRECTION: since we are not in the southern hemisphere, we won't get to see this eclipse. Darn tilt!) There will be several dinner options to choose from, including vegetarian. The schedule is:
